If the kitchen is the heart of the home, it makes sense to make sure it looks great, especially if you're planning to sell the home. Before you start budgeting for a full kitchen remodel, consider making these changes to first. Even small changes can make a difference in the look and feel of your kitchen.

Fluorescent Lighting. If your kitchen has the fluorescent tube lighting covered with the plastic rectangles, that's a common sign your kitchen needs updating. The hue of fluorescent lights is often unflattering and flush mount lighting or pendant lighting is a much better, more modern solution.

Fad Colors. Adding a pop of color in your kitchen through decor or even small appliances is a smart, easy way to update. But stay away from painting your cabinets sky blue or another trendy color. Neutrals like gray and linen appeal to the masses and don't date your home the way other colors may.

Worn Drawer Knobs. You can easily update your kitchen by just changing your drawer pull knobs. Choose a drawer pull knob that compliments the size of the drawers and cabinets, and is a classic, simple style. Stay away from "themed" knobs like chickens or apples and go for a classic design that is more likely to appeal to potential home buyers.

Clutter. Clutter is never a good thing if you're trying to sell your home. Remove all but the essential small appliances from your counter, and store in the pantry or garage. Commit to opening and going through mail immediately and any other "piles" that tend to gather on kitchen counters need to be stored somewhere out of sight.

White on White on White. For a while, an all-white kitchen was all the rage. Not only is it difficult to keep clean, it makes a kitchen look sterile and not very welcoming. Choose a neutral back splash or you can add a simple wallpaper to warm up the room.

Old Faucet. A worn out, dingy faucet isn't doing your kitchen any favors. Replace it with a new faucet with a sleek design that compliments the style of your kitchen for an easy, inexpensive update.
