Vacant Lot NW RenoIf you're planning to have your dream home built and haven't picked a home builder, there are several things to consider. Working with a trusted Realtor who has relationships with local builders will almost always be your best bet to find a home builder who fits your needs.

Ask for Recommendations. Friends, family and your Realtor can give you names of home builders they have worked with in the past. If you're choosing between a couple builders, ask them for recommendations. Often, they can provide you with the contact information of some of their prior clients who have agreed to be references.

Get the List. Some neighborhoods like Somersett have required or preferred builders. Ask the community association for the official list and go from there.

Read Reviews. Do your research online before committing to a home builder. You'll often find reviews for home builders and specific contractors.

Ask the Association. If you've found a neighborhood you love, drive around looking at homes. If you find there's a particular floor plan or style you like, write the address down. The community association will likely be able to tell you who built the home.

Work with an Architect. If you're building a custom home, an architect may be your first stop. They will be able to recommend local home builders they have worked with before and trust to build your home.

Visit Homes in Progress. Builders should be able to walk you through current projects their working on. Not only is it incredibly interesting to see a home go up, but this will give you an idea of how detailed the builder is.
