The holidays can be a hectic time of year and between decorating, shopping, and holiday parties. It's easy to forget basic home maintenance in December, but completing just a few of these home maintenance tips can make your holiday season more enjoyable.

Snow on Trees- Snow building up on tree limbs can break branches and can cause significant damage to trees. Brush snow off trees with a broom to extend your reach. If branches do break, hire a professional to trim the tree and haul off debris.

Replace Weatherstripping. If your home is feeling drafty, old or missing weatherstripping could be the culprit. Check the weatherstripping around doors and windows and replace if necessary.

Clean the Chimney. Nothing ruins an peaceful evening of the family enjoying a roaring fire like a blockage in the chimney. If you haven't had the chimney cleaned this season, contact a licensed chimney sweep to get on their schedule.

Prepare the Guest Room. If you will be having overnight guests during the holidays, make sure the guest room is guest-ready. Linens should be freshly laundered and your guests will appreciate extra toiletries in the bathroom in case they forget anything. Make sure closet doors, light switches, and outlets all work properly.

Schedule a Carpet Cleaner. Holiday parties can take a toll on your flooring. Schedule a professional carpet cleaner now for after the holidays. Post-New Year's Eve you will be thankful you made this call now.

Check Your Fire Extinguishers. Make sure your fire extinguishers are not expired and are easily accessible from the kitchen and any fire places and that everyone in the family knows how to use them.
