Guide to Selling a Home Before the Holidays

Are you envisioning the stockings hung on the mantle with care and the holiday roast baking to perfection in the oven, all in a new home? Celebrating the holidays in your new home, doesn't have to be a dream as there is still time to sell your current home before the holidays. While summer might be the most popular time of year to sell a home, selling in the winter, especially when inventory is low like it is in Northern Nevada, can be an excellent time to sell. In addition to working with a Realtor who has significant experience selling homes in Reno-Sparks, check out these tips to sell your home fast before the holidays. 

Play Up Holiday Features. Does the home have a gorgeous fireplace? Add stockings or garland or a large decor item to make the fireplace the focal point of the room. Is your front porch spacious? Winter and holiday decor can draw attention to what could be an overlooked space during the winter. A staircase may look grand with appropriate decorations. But, don't go overboard with decorations as you want home buyers to see the space and not your decorating style. 

Have a Pre-Inspection. Paying for a home inspection before you get any offers can benefit you in many ways. Not only will you be able to see and address any issues that may come up on the inspection, but if provided to home buyers, it can provide them with security in knowing something terrible won't come up on their inspection. 

Keep it Bright. Since daylight is waning, more buyers may be seeing your home in the dark. Make sure all the light bulbs in your home are functioning and keep all the lights on for showings. Remember to keep porch lights on so potential buyers who may be driving by can see the home. During the day, keep blinds and curtains open to let as much natural light as possible in. 

Be Flexible. Open houses and showing appointments may not be convenient for the home owner, especially during the holiday season when life seems to be busier in general. But staying flexible may be the thing that gets your house shown when others are not. Work closely with your Realtor to plan open houses and remain flexible with showings. 

Choose Appropriate Holiday Decor. While you want to play up holiday features, make sure to keep it appropriate. Having too much decor can overwhelm a home's features and distract potential buyers. If you aren't sure if the decor is too much, a trusted friend or your agent will be able to offer an unbiased opinion. 

Clean Up Curb Appeal. Muddy front walks, a leaf-cluttered porch, and overgrown shrubs don't provide the best curb appeal. Make sure the front yard is well-maintained and the front porch looks inviting.
