The Latino Research Center will host this annual free community event to celebrate Day of the Dead, Día de los Muertos. Students, university organizations, and all members of the community are invited to take part in the festivities and are encouraged to submit altars to the exhibit. Although Day of the Dead comes from the ancient Aztecs, the holiday is now celebrated throughout the world. Come and observe the rich heritage of this event through a variety of activities. Enjoy food, live entertainment, music, and arts and crafts, including sugar skull decorating papel picado (paper cut-outs), and face painting.

Violinist Oliver Leitner, the former superstar concertmaster of the Youth Symphony Orchestra, returns as a celebrated Davidson Fellow, performing Chausson’s rhapsodic Poeme, an exquisite, lyrical showcase for the violin. Haydn’s Symphony No. 49 is a prime musical manifestation of the Sturm und Drang (Storm and Stress) period in Germany, a dramatic and emotive standout among classical era symphonies. Elgar’s Enigma Variations is one of classical music’s mysteries. Beginning with a haunting theme and followed by variations on it, music lovers enjoy musing over the “enigma” that Elgar references.

November Events in Reno/Sparks: Veterans Day Parade

At 11:11 a.m., a traditional opening ceremony takes place at the Virginia Street Bridge and includes a flyby. The parade starts at 11:20 a.m. and marches through the heart of downtown Reno, beginning from the Virginia Street Bridge and heading north to Fifth Street. Spectators are encouraged to show their support along the parade route. Announcers will review the parade from several locations: the Virginia Street Bridge, Second and Virginia streets, the Reno Arch, and Fourth Street. Ending between 1–2 p.m., the commemoration takes place rain or shine.

Travis Fiest from Sierra Avalanche Center will lead attendees through the SAC’s “Daily Flow,” a risk management plan for the backcountry. Bring cash for the huge raffle benefiting the Sierra Avalanche Center, Tahoe’s local avalanche forecasting center, which provides a wealth of information to backcountry skiers, riders, and sledders. Their mission is to inform and educate the public about backcountry avalanche conditions in the greater Tahoe area.

An internationally recognized artist who has studied lions for decades, John Banovich has created a body of work that is also an homage to these animals. King of Beasts features more than forty artworks that explore questions about humanity’s deep fear, love, and admiration for these creatures. The exhibition spans nearly twenty-five years of work and assembles his body of work focused on African Lions for the very first time. Join Banovich as he discusses his advocacy and love for these magnificent creatures. Doors open at 5 p.m. with a cash bar and book sales. Book signing to follow.

Dr. John Byck joins us from the Metropolitan Museum of Art to explore key aspects of fine historical firearm design from the sixteenth century through the modern period. From ingenious mechanisms to beautiful decorations to perfect balance, Byck will examine relationships between early engravings and the decorative arts. Dr. John Byck is the Assistant Curator in the Department of Arms and Armor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Byck holds a BA from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. from New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts. A specialist in ornament, he joined the Department of Arms and Armor at the Met in 2015 after serving as a research assistant in the Department of Drawings and Prints.

Kimberly Roberts will discuss the history of camping in Nevada and the Sierra Nevada, including the development of public lands for camping and the building of campgrounds, roads, and trails. The discussion includes an examination of the development of outdoor equipment specific to camping, and the many styles of camping, ranging from leave-no-trace backpacking to luxury glamping. The talk will cover the popularity of children’s summer camps and the history of groups such as the Boy and Girl Scouts. Kimberly Roberts is a former HRPS board member and is currently HRPS Program Co-Chair. She works at UNR Special Collections and has a master’s degree in history, specializing in the history of photography, science, environment, and landscape. She curated the camping exhibit currently on display at the IGT Knowledge Center on the UNR campus.

Edi Rama: WORK, an exhibition of the artist and Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, includes a series of new drawings created on documents and notes Rama creates during meetings and phone calls, as well as ceramic sculptures and a floor-to-ceiling wallpaper that emulates the wallpaper in his office at the Ministry in Tirana. Edi Rama’s drawing practice has developed in close parallel with his career as a politician.

The Trees and Lights Gala is Safe Embrace’s largest fundraiser, held annually on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This fundraising event is the perfect way to kick off your holiday season. Participants can choose the timed 10K run or a two-mile un-timed walk or run around the Sparks Marina. The 10K, which equates to a little more than six miles, uses city streets, as well as the local bike path. Both the 10K and the two-mile events will start and finish in the parking lot of Scheels.

The first 250 children will receive a special gift.

All proceeds are donated directly to local charities and stay within or community. There will be photo opportunities with Santa, and you can experience a train ride around the holiday forest.
