3 Ways To Stay Connected And Support Your Community Right Now

Posted by Jeff Sallan on Monday, May 18th, 2020 at 11:00am.

As we continue to navigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our community, economy, and society, it’s more important than ever to stay connected to one another. That’s why at Dickson Realty, we’re supporting a variety of programs that help everyone do just that.

These Programs Can Help Our Community Stay Connected

Feeding Our Vulnerable Populations

Because of Covid-19, the number of people facing severe food insecurity has increased dramatically, both globally and locally. At the same time, hundreds of individuals in the food industry have lost their jobs. To address both challenges, several local nonprofit and corporate organizations created a new partnership to ensure the most vulnerable in our community have access to prepared meals while preserving job security for restaurant kitchens: Delivering with Dignity.

This program aims to help the elderly, those with underlying medical conditions, and their family members living in the same household who are most at risk of contracting COVID-19 if they leave their homes. It’s the result of a collaboration between United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra, the Lieutenant Governor of Nevada, Reno Local Food Group, Moonridge Foundation, and COPIA.

For all of us, dollars are stretched thin, but the partners at Dickson Realty have decided that we are grateful that we can put food on the table, and we needed to help those who cannot do the same, so we have donated to this project. If you can do the same and donate your dollars or time to the cause, visit uwnns.org/dwd to learn more.

Feeding Our Children’s Minds

To help our children stay connected, engaged, entertained, and educated during this time, we’re also supporting Camp Curiosity, from PBS Reno. Our local public broadcasting station launched this free at-home camp to help meet the demand for trusted educational online resources, bringing the world to the fingertips of children across central and northern Nevada and northeastern California.

Camp Curiosity provides free lesson plans, projects, games, and videos that are connected to PBS Reno’s on-air programs, including Curious George, Wild Kratts, Cat in the Hat, and Wild Nevada. There are also interactive contests and chances for children to appear on television.

PBS Reno is partnering with Washoe County School District to promote distance education activities that tie to PBS Reno content on-air and online.

Parents, caregivers, and educators can learn more at pbsreno.org/campcuriosity or call the Camp Curiosity hotline at 775-600-0537.

Feeding Our Souls

While the coronavirus pandemic has closed museums and canceled concerts, many of our local arts organizations are delivering culture and creativity online.

Our local gem, The Nevada Museum of Art, is putting thousands of art pieces and objects in the museum online and offering art resources and activities for you to through its Museum from Home program.

Visit nevadaart.org/museum-from-home to explore the virtual gallery tours, or see the latest activity you can try at home.

By leaning into and supporting the many resources our community has, we can all stay connected and get through this time together.
