Posted by Jeff Sallan on Tuesday, May 5th, 2020 at 6:08am.

If you've been spending more time in your yard since the Covid-19 stay at home order, you are not alone. In Northern Nevada, we are lucky to have weather that allows us to enjoy time outside practically all year long. More homeowners are are taking elements of the indoors outside and remodeling their patios, porches, and decks. Here are some of our favorite outdoor living trends.

Social Spaces. Whether that is an outdoor bar or a sitting area, home owners are opting for outdoor spaces that encourage socializing. Choose comfortable seating, some kind of table, and lighting if you plan to use the area in the evening.

Vertical Gardens. Perfect for small spaces or as a focal point in a larger yard, vertical gardens are versatile and fairly easy to maintain. Choose flowers or herbs and just be sure the plants receive enough sun.

Personalized Spaces. Meditation gardens, outdoor yoga studios, and patio reading nooks are gaining in popularity. Take advantage of the sunny days in Reno-Sparks and create a space you will enjoy regularly.

Pizza Ovens. Outdoor kitchens have been popular for years and an outdoor pizza oven is the perfect addition! You can purchase one pre-built, build one yourself, or hire a professional to create a custom oven for you.

Landscape Lighting. Not only is lighting beneficial for safety, but the type of lighting you choose can highlight outdoor features, add ambiance, and bring the feeling of indoors outside. Choose solar lights, string lights, or step lights for a unique look.

Vegetable Gardens. There has been increased interest in sustainability and backyard gardens are gaining in popularity. If your yard is smaller or you don't want to dedicate a lot of space to a garden, consider container gardening.

Modern Fire Pits. Propane has changed the fire pit game. Instead of worrying about the wind affecting your wood fire, propane fire pits are clean burning and maintain a constant heat.
